Parkinson's and One Floor Living and/or Stair Lift

Right now I live in a large five bedroom two story Colonial with a finished basement. I want to move but my husband does not want to move for another year or so. He wants to wait until our last child finishes college. She is a Junior right now and has one more year until graduation. He wants to move to a one floor ranch home.  There are very few ranch homes in our area and I want to stay close by and so does he.  The ONLY new construction in our area is carriage homes(a fancy name for a row home).  I would really like to buy brand new so that we don't have to do anything to the home.  My husband does not do anything around the house or the yard and I am tired of looking for people to do the work.  I don't even mind if we have to pay an HOA fee. I don't know how bad my PD will become. I know it can't get better but I don't know how bad it will become and/or how quickly it will progress and that is just so scary to me. I started cleaning out my house over a year ago and I feel as if I've barely made a dent in it.

I don't want to take care of a pool or hire a landscape company or snow removal, etc.  Carriage homes are definitely at least two floors so I was looking into getting a chair lift/stair lift. I know my friend who has MS has a  stair lift and she says it really helps her because she has fallen a few times. I have not fallen going up or down the steps yet but I now feel shaky on the steps when I am going up. I only go up them at night and down in the morning and that is it for the day! If I need something I have to wait to get it until the next day!  I will continue to look for a ranch home that is totally updated and does not have much land to take care of.  It is difficult to clean out a large house that had five kids grow up in it.  My daughter Amy
died at age 18 eighteen years ago and it is difficult to get rid of anything that ever belonged to her. I have tried to give some of her things to places that would really appreciate having them. She collected Breyer  horses and I gave them to a woman's shelter for the kids to play with. I was able to give her clothes away because I could imagine hearing her saying in my ear, OMG mom, get rid of those clothes, they are so old!! I would never wear them now.! But it took me a long time to get there emotionally.
With PD and painful Sciatica, it is difficult to try to stand long in any one place and I am afraid to stand on a chair to empty out the top of closets!  I filled four huge trash bags for GOODWILL which we will drop off today when we go to the cemetery to visit Amy.  When we finally get to the real moving out stage,  I will have to hire people to come in and pack.  But first, I need to get rid of so much more stuff!  I am thinking of just hiring an auction company to come in and auction everything off and buy brand new! I think movers are expensive and I would like to live with and have less. LESS IS MORE at this point in life. I want less to take care of due to Parkinson's and Sciatica. Dan and I have never spent an enormous amount of money on furniture. I think my living room furniture came from JC Penney and my family room furniture came from Big Lots and Target! LOL, I don't want to pay movers $500/hour to move tables that cost $100 each!

  1. Hang in there, everything will work itself out. I ended up knocking down my old house (split level ranch) and built a one level with bathroom accommodations. All my furniture went to my son and still working on the boxes holding our other stuff. I use a timer to overcome the procrastination/apathy. I allow 15 minutes and reset every 15 minutes if I am on a roll.

  2. We also raised 5 kids in a 3 level house on a large lot. My hwp is 72 and our situation is similar to yours. He also suffers from scoliosis which causes lower back pain. Would love to sell everything that is not a necessity and move to a one-level ranch on a tiny lot in a warmer sunnier climate, but what an overwhelming task to downsize!

    1. The task of emptying out my house is daunting!! I see that there are some companies that can come in and sell everything, in an online auction!! They probably take 50%(just guessing ) but at least it would get rid of it! I have been going to the liquor store because they always have lots of empty boxes and then I fill the boxes with things under the bathroom sinks, in the linen closets, etc. It is just a small thing but it makes me feel as if I am making small progress towards moving!!
