Occupational Therapy

Today an occupational therapist came to my house.  She was so sweet.

Most of the time she spent assessing me and asking me questions. I had to stand on one foot with my eyes closed. I could do that for about 2 seconds.  I had to put pegs into holes and then take them out while being timed.I had o read words and numbers and be timed. Those tests I did fine in because I am  an avid reader and have been most of my life.   Liz is going to do two days per week of the LSVT BIG Program and my PT Emily will do the other two days. They will come to my house and do the BIG exercises with me.  Then i am supposed to repeat them later in the day.  While they do the exercises they also include a cognitive task.  For example, I had to walk as fast as possible from one end of the room to the other by counting backwards by fives, starting with 100!  The second time she tested me, I had to sit up and down on a chair with my arms folded across my chest and name fruits alphabetically.   Apple, banana, cherry, etc.  I use to be so good at multitasking, now it is a huge effort. After she tested me and I realized how far I have descended from being able to multitask, I felt really crappy.  But it is what it is!
Then I met my friend Leslie for lunch.  We had the best time.  When I got there, I was in excruciating pain but I sort of forgot about it while I  was sitting, chatting, and laughing with her! When I finished lunch, I picked up Olya because I promised to take her shopping. She wanted to get a pantsuit to go to the career fair for internships at the end of the month. Olya is pretty so she looks good in anything. I thought she should get a skirt instead of pants but she was insistent that she wanted a pantsuit! I told her that she could get a blazer, a pair of pants to match, and two blouses. Somehow she also got a pair of shoes!! Olya got a black pantsuit and a beautiful white blouse and a black and white striped blouse!  Then we went to Boscovs and she got a really pretty and comfortable pair of black flat shoes.  Olya always thanks me for what I pay for.
After our shopping expedition, we stopped at CVS to pick up prescriptions. Olya wanted to get a flu shot.  So she signed up and we had to wait about 30 minutes.  Somehow there were make-up things and shampoo. etc in my cart!! There was no hand sanitizer to be found in the store and there were no wet wipes and/or disinfecting wipes. I needed toilet paper so I got three huge bundles of that.  I think I am buying into the frenzy!  But I just can't be without toilet paper!!! My sister told me not to worry about toilet paper because she has tons of it in her garage!I wanted to get rubbing alcohol because Leslie told me that it is easy to make hand sanitizer.  Leslie sent me the ingredients needed to make sanitizer.  Once again, not a drop to be found, the shelf was wiped out!
I have been writing my novel. I am working on Chapter 5. The people in my writing group didn't really seem to like my novel. They thought I should take out most of the introduction?? Crazy!!One person is writing a story about two young cousins who grew up together and fell in love. Yuck, not my type of novel.  A guy in the group is writing a non-fiction story about his life.  Apparently he didn't have a good life! Another woman brought a piece of non-fiction about an article she wrote for the company she works for. I found it totally confusing.  I think I will work on my novel by myself. I am a certified reading specialist, an avid reader and I taught writing and reading classes at  the local community college as well as two state universities.

  1. glad to see you doing the Big Step programm Colleen I never realized how this programm is the same ..in different parts of the world..i do this as well..at my community center,,we have a very big space there..the other day my instructor asked us to bring our favorite music for excercise..I was surprised how many people brought "mellow" ,music at least mellow to my hard rock loving ears :-)..so when it was my week..I brought all my favorite AC/DC...you know all that hard rock music you love Colleen :-) at the end of the session..she tol me..boy Hans that music really gets people moving..ha ha you think....your novel is interesting as is the reaction..one of the reasons I think science fiction..and fantasy .are such popular genres i think,,is that you can tackle any issue..but because it is not "real" people can aborb it...this is the secret behind the unending popularity of stuff like Star Trek and its endless spinoffs..everything is metaphor,,,Tolkien...CS Lewis..who wrote Christain novels set in fantasy..anyway..rock on Colleen...you are inspritional as always...

    1. HANS, you need to move to the u.S> so we can hang out!! My favorite music is sixties music. Mellow music is NOT my thing unless it is a for the cool down because then i know the class is almost over!! Fortunately, most of the instructors at my gym also love sixties music or maybe they choose it because the class is for seniors!! Did you start the facebook group that you are an admin for? You sure have a lot of members! My facebook group will be one year old on March 26th!
